US Food maps

Here’s an interesting set of food-related maps and charts (compiled at Vox) which show details about food production, farming and farmers, etc.

One of the more interesting maps is #16, shown below, of food deserts in the US. Food deserts are places where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited. There is some correlation between these deserts and low-income communities. The southeast states look to be rife with them.

Also check out maps #18 on the change in obesity rates over time, and #31 on where all the McDondald’s are located (I’d guess it’s linked to population density in those areas).
