It’s been a little while since I’ve updated this blog. (The previous title of this post was “March 2015 Update”.)
Here are some things that I’ve previously posted on my Twitter feed, but I’ll repost here mainly because it will be easier for me to search for it in the future.
So here’s what I’ve been up to food-wise.
Roasted chickpeas – a great crunchy snack that’s fills you on a relatively small amount, and can be flavoured however you wish.
Pork broth – simmer some pork bones for a day or two and you’ll have a soup base that’s tasty on its own or to add body to any dish. Soy beans – this is the leftover pulp from making soy milk, which I ended up adding to a loaf of bread. It didn’t really add much noticable flavour or texture to the bread but it didn’t hurt the end result either. Better than tossing the stuff out, imo. Yeast – yeast proofing in warm water, soon to be added to bread dough. Potato Leek soup – great use of the pork broth here, which added a little more flavour to the potato, leek, garlic, salt, and pepper. Kettle corn popcorn – 1T coconut oil and 1T sugar in a pot with 1/2 cup unpopped popcorn. Red bean soup with mini tapioca balls – flavoured with rock sugar and dried orange peel.
I think this was the result of the pork bones simmered in the photo above. Mirepoix for a stew. Beautiful beets for the stew.
Japanese mitarashi dango.
Beef tongue. Simmered for a few hours, ready for skinning and slicing thin.
